Asbestos can be an incidious invader of your home, depending upon the age of the home.   The EPA issued a final rule banning most asbestos containing products on July 12, 1989.  However  in 1991, this regulation was overturned by the firth circuit court of appeals in New Orleans. Prior to that date, many older homes has hidden asbestos with in the walls in insulation around old wiring or in the attic as insulation, textured paints, joint compounds, floor tiles and acoustic tiles. As well as appliances such as electrical appliances, ironing boards, dryers, even toasters and gas-fired fireplaces.  It was also used in siding, felt paper for roofing .  Many people buying older homes and remodeling should be away of where of  hidden asbestos could be.  For example, in older homes with the older type “fuse boxes”, which are now not up to code, will probably have wiring that has asbestos as a covering, as this was used as fire proofing at that time, and now these wires are run through conduit for spark and fired protection.  It is important that if the home owner is remodeling an older home that that home be tested for Asbestos and if found removed per EPA standard.

If you find some of the above materials that are still in the home, and they are in good condition, it is best to leave them alone.  To disturb or take these out of the home will then disturb the fibers that are then inhaled into the lungs or swallowed and where they pierce the tissues and remain and there to cause three diseases  up to 30 years later. The disease that are due to exposure to asbestos which are Mesothelioma, which is a cancer of the lining of the chest or abdomen, Asbestosis and Lung Cancer.  It is estimated that over 20 million person during the period from 1940 to 1979 were effective to this microscopic fibers.  Not only the workers who worked directly with asbestos, but also bringing the microscopic fibers into their home and to their family.
